Movie Mad Review:
The 4th May 2007 heralded Spiderman 3, and of course Movie Mad was in attendance.
Can we believe the hype or will we be let down!
Peter Parker (Tobey Mcquire) has finally found the balance he's longed for between his love for Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst) and his responsibilities as Spider-Man.
The city of New York and it's citizens are at last coming around and appreciating everything he has done as his crime-fighting alter ego, and Peter is in the running for a staff job at the Daily Bugle.
However, everything Peter has worked for is about to unravel.
Flint Marko (Thomas Haden Church), while fleeing prison, is caught in an accident that displaces molecules and is transformed into the `Sandman', a new super villain who is able to change his body into any shape of sand he sees fit.
When Peter learns of a connection between The Sandman and the murder of his Uncle Ben, he will stop at nothing as Spider-Man to capture him.
But before Peter can do so he discovers a mysterious black substance has turned his suit black, and has brought forth a darker side of Parker and Spidey nobody has seen before.
Peter begins to give into this new dark personality, starts to abandon the ones he loves the most, and in turn his best friend Harry Osborn (James Franco) takes up his late father's mantle as The New Goblin.
Quickly Parker begins a new romance with his lab partner, the beautiful Gwen Stacy (Bryce Dallas Howard) but in doing so Peter sets off a rival Bugle photographer, a troubled young man by the name of Eddie Brock (Topher Grace) who is obsessed with Stacy.
Little does Peter know the black substance has its sights set on Eddie as well.
Brock is turned into Venom, a arch-foe that mirrors everything Spider-Man can do. Peter is forced to become the strong-willed hero he has forgotten about if he hopes to defeat his greatest threat yet.
The characters and special effects are of the highest calibre, as we would expect, acting is superb as is the story.
`The Sandman' is excellent, with CGI being pushed to the limits once again.
What gets boring is the long drawn out romance between Parker and Mary Jane in the middle of the movie!
I am sorry to report that `Kirsten Dunst' is no longer a hottie, gone is `The Bring It On Cheerleader' the `Virgin from Suicides'. She only ever looks decent at the end of the movie in a plane blouse and short skirt.
Tobey Mcquire is class, both as the Geek and Spiderman, and when he is at his dark side he is brilliant, as jive walking, ruthless cool dude!
The movie I feel is slightly too long, by about 15 minutes, but it can be forgiven.
This is suppose to be Mcquire's last outing, maybe he should stay and Dunst should go! Her acting is good, but she looks pale and bland!
The movie is good, as are the effects, but sometimes the action is to fast paced, which can look a blur at times, can we have too many villains in a movie! Who knows!
You decide! One thing is for sure, watch it at the cinema!
Worth Watching ?
Spidey is always worth watching, but its not as good as parts 1 & 2.
Worth Owning on DVD ?
Definately! Sony will hammer the Blu-Ray product with a giant of a release, which will make this the biggest selling release ever!
Our Rating:
3 out of 5.
