Movie Mad Review:
We love conspiracy theories, the fascination with which seems especially strong post 9/11. And The Da Vinci Code provides what is the most talked about conspiracy of all time.
The mystery begins with a murder inside the Louvre (France), with clues in Leonardo Da Vinci paintings leading to a race against time to discover a religious mystery protected by a secret society for two thousand years. The finding of which, could shake the core foundations of Christianity.
Over 40 million have read the book by Dan Brown, so how does the film compare?
It isn't an exact carbon-copy of the book, with a few deviations thrown in by Ron Howard. Most notably, the final ending itself.
The cast is very good, as are the visual effects and the portrayal of the characters. In particular that of Silas, the albino monk, played by Paul Bettany. The only character that doesn't quite seem to fit, is Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon. He just doesn't seem to look how you'd imagine him to, although does a great job in the role in terms of acting ability.
Overall, i found the film to be pretty poor, but think having read the book was a major factor in this opinion.
Due to this, there was no suspense, since i was aware of all the twists and turns in the plot, as well as what the final outcome would be.
And also, it doesn't go into as much depth of the history of the conspiracy as the book, so may seem like it's moving too fast for those that have not read the book.
Worth Watching ?
It is one of the most anticipated films of 2006, and is sure to break all Box Office records. So yes.
Worth Owning on DVD ?
Personally, i would rather read the book again than watch this film more than once.
Our Rating:
3 out of 5.
